Day 8: Dordogne

This was one of our most active days yet! We went on a whole-day road trip around the Dordogne region (named after the river) and saw many little towns along the way. Our first stop was Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil. This is a region with several prehistoric caves where some early modern humans were discovered.

We went into the museum that describes lots of the prehistoric life and development of tools.

Outside the museum there was also a very nice lookout terrace where you could stand beneath the cliffs and an old castle, built into the side of the cliff.

The buildings that were built into the side of the cliffs were really interesting!

Next we went to Beynac-et-Cezenac where we found the chateau de Beynac (at the very top of the hill).

It was a pretty steep climb all the way to the top.

But when we got there the view was really nice!

This is the Chateau de Beynac which is actually privately owned but many parts are open to the public. There didn't seem to be that many people there on that day, so we pretty much had the whole place to ourselves. We were able to walk through a lot of the castle, and up to a lookout point in one of the towers, for another beautiful view!

Then we drove to La Roque-Gageac. This amazingly picturesque town was stuck between a huge rock face and a river. The steps were steep and the houses were built on many levels to take advantage of what little space there was.

Even without lots of space, the buildings were still very beautiful.

As were the narrow walk-ways and streets....

During our late lunch break we got some delicious ice cream!

Our last stop was called Domme. This walled city used to be a fortified medieval town. There was a pretty nice view from the top too!

To finish off the day we had dinner at a small restaurant overlooking the valley. This was the exact view from our table, although no picture could ever do it justice.
