Day 10: Basque Country

Today we took a road trip from our campsite in the Bassin d'Arcachon to the south-west coast of France, the Basque country. The first stop was Bayonne, where it was very sunny and warm. The skyline of this town is dominated by the spires of Cathédrale Sainte-Marie.

Spires of Cathédrale Sainte-Marie

The cathedral is very large, and filled with impressive paintings and stained glass windows.

The buildings here have a very distinct style. The houses are tall and narrow, with colourful shutters and details.

The city is built around the Adour and Nive Rivers, so there are several bridges.

Next we drove to Saint-Jean-de-Luz, to have lunch on the beach. It was colder and windier there than expected!

After lunch we walked along the boardwalk and through the town.

The style of buildings here was noticeably different than Bayonne.

Our last stop was Biarritz, which is also on the coast. There are more rocks in this harbour, and there were even people surfing!

The architecture was different once again, as this has historically been a wealthier city. This was also evident in the more expensive shops found there.

After our road trip, we returned to the campsite for our last night in France.
